What is a Carbon Water Filter?

While 70% of the earth is made up of water, only 2.5 percent is freshwater.

As Americans, we use that freshwater in all sorts of ways - we brush our teeth with it, bathe in it, and use it to water our pets and plants. Very few of us, likely, ever stop to think about how clean that water is.

It’s true that America is blessed with some of the safest drinking water in the world, but even our supply of water isn’t without its dangers and additions. In the last three years, 41 states throughout the country have reported a higher-than-acceptable level of lead in their drinking water, and this says nothing of the chemicals, acids, and deposits that are floating along in our water stream, as well.

This is where a carbon water filter comes in.

Designed to strip water of impurities and leave it safe for your family, a carbon water filter is an excellent addition to any household, and any bidet.

A carbon water filter extends the life of your electric bidet seat, by running the water through your filter before entering your bidet. It also softens the water when it hits your delicate parts.

How Does a Carbon Water Filter Work?

A carbon water filter uses granular activated carbon, also known as GAC, to remove certain chemicals from water.

The filter works by pulling water through a bed of activated carbon, which removes contaminants and impurities through chemical adsorption. Adsorption is a process whereby molecules are trapped inside the carbon substrate and thus extracted from the liquid surrounding them.

Because each particle of carbon offers a large surface area (a single pound of activated carbon contains a surface area of about 100 acres), these filters are incredibly effective at removing impurities from water.

What Does a Carbon Water Filter Remove?

Carbon water filters are particularly effective at removing a variety of contaminants from water but excel at organic chemicals. Compounds like hydrogen sulfide are attracted to the carbon particles and are easy to remove from water with these filters.

Bear in mind that other substances, like nitrate and iron, are not attracted to carbon molecules, and won’t be removed by a carbon filter. If you have these compounds in your water, you may need an additional filter, like a reverse osmosis or green sand unit.

There are two primary types of carbon filters: whole-house and point-of-entry. A whole-house filter will remove contaminants from your home’s entire water supply, while a point-of-entry filter is ideal for use on a kitchen faucet or, you guessed it, an electric bidet toilet seat!

Since water filters don't last forever, it's recommended you change out your carbon water filter every six (6) months.

We continually improve our sourcing of the best bidet filters so the brand of filter in the photos might not match what is received. We stand behind our products and guarantee equal or better quality.
